Proximity

Prince George’s County, MD | 2022

A collaboration between Flux Studio and David Hess of Hess Industries, this artwork honors Matthew Henson’s legacy as the first African-American North Pole explorer and a key contributor to the expansion of scientific knowledge. The artwork consists of two iceberg-like forms illuminated by color-changing LED lights integrated within the smaller iceberg. Tension between the two forms recalls the simultaneous ephemerality and durability of nature, and gives visitors an immersive experience of space and light. During the day, the textured stainless steel reflects sunlight, while at night the color-changing LEDs project an aurora borealis-like effect onto the surface of the larger iceberg. The sculpture’s strong daytime and nighttime presence enhance the architecture of the ice rink and help to establish a sense of place at the nearby Henson Creek.
