This community-led landscape light art project activates a previously neglected East Baltimore underpass with sixteen “light totems” that cast colorful moiré patterns on the underpass walls and passersby. Rather than striving to meet practical illumination standards, our lighting design approach focused on increasing public perceptions of safety around the underpass and celebrating the surrounding East Baltimore communities. In collaboration with PI.KL architects, we analyzed existing conditions at the underpass and held information sessions and workshops to involve community members in the concept development. We also worked with a local steel fabricator to develop a custom, yet budget-conscious totem design that consists of linear blue and amber LEDs shining through a layered stainless steel mesh assembly1
